Come Inside and Pray!

Share with your friends on Facebook

Back in 1989, former President George Bush was entering St. John’s Episcopal Church one Sunday morning to attend a worship service.

A homeless man, William Wallace Brown Jr., stopped him and asked President Bush to say a prayer for him. The President’s answer must have shocked any onlookers. He replied, “No. Come inside with us — and pray for yourself.”

From that day forward, William Wallace Brown Jr. regularly attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. This man in ragged, smelly clothes sat in the pews alongside the rich and the powerful.

At the offering time when the plates were passed, he put a dollar in the collection plate. One usher reported that many of the rich members sitting around him also gave only a dollar at the offering time.

Thanks to King Duncan for retelling the story. Thanks to Pranavsinh Suratia for the photo.
