My Favorite Piece!

Share with your friends on Facebook

A couple was celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They had all of their kids, grandkids, family and friends together for a lovely mass at church and then a fantastic party.

When the evening was finished the couple returned home at 1:00 AM. As they had done for years, the wife made a pot of tea and the husband got out a loaf of her homemade raison bread.  He cut slices for them to eat with butter and jam.

He put the end piece of crust on her plate and another piece on his plate. When she noticed this she went ballistic.  “For fifty years you’ve been giving me the end piece with the crust and I’ve been eating it. I’ve had it! No more!” She threw it at him and ran off into the bedroom crying.

Later when she returned to the kitchen in her bathrobe, the husband looked up at her and said: “But honey, the end slice with the crust has always been my favorite piece!”

In today’s Gospel (Mark 10, 2-16) Jesus drives home the point that from the very beginning what God wanted for a couple in marriage was that they become one as helpmates. That they would always be there for each other, no matter what.

Jesus says that marriage is a most special gift from God. The people who heard this were shocked, totally shocked. They saw women, and especially wives, as property of the husband and not very valuable property at that. Jesus is emphasizing how truly sacred marriage is and how truly sacred a wife and a husband are to each other.

What do YOU see as the major sacrifice a couple makes in their marriage?
