My Tears Really Count

Share with your friends on Facebook

I’ve been home from the hospital and rehab with my broken left leg for two weeks now. I am in a wheelchair all the time except when I do a two-step hop into bed. Saturday night I prepared my first home-cooked meal since November 20th. What a treat! So delicious!

For the first time in my life I can identify with the many physically-challenged people I would only notice as I passed them by. Seeing their limitations always frightened me. Until February 22nd,  my wheelchair will be my constant companion. I think it is worthwhile for me to experience what so many other people go through every day.

Joni Eareckson Tada in 1967 had to confront her own crippled, finite body. Joni broke her neck in a diving accident and was paralyzed from the neck down. When she rose from her deep depression, she found refuge and hope in her strong Christian faith. Joni became a successful commercial artist and a best-selling author.

In one of her books, A Step Further, Joni writes: “If God’s mind was small enough for me to understand, God wouldn’t be God. Sometimes I hate being in a wheelchair, but this is where God’s grace takes over. Even in my handicap, God has a plan and a purpose for my life. God began his earthly life in a stinky stable. He got angry. He was lonely. He went without a place to call his own, abandoned by his closest friends. This is a God I can trust. I know my tears count with him.”

When you are strapped with personal physical limitations and a wheelchair, you have a different slant of what’s going on in the world. Sometimes I want to roll my wheelchair up and say to many of the people I see on TV or some that I know: “Wake up!” “Grow up!”
