A man I know was always busy and over-committed. This led to his snapping at his wife and children. At mealtimes he chucked down his food and he was irritated if there were interruptions.
One evening his youngest daughter wanted to tell him something important that had happened to her at school. She spoke hurriedly, “Daddy, I wanna tell you something and I’ll tell you really fast.”
The man suddenly realized how he was upsetting his family and how frustrated his daughter was with him. So he said, “Honey, you can tell me and you don’t have to tell me really fast. Say it slowly.”
The man never forgot her response: “Then please listen slowly!”
In the three weeks I was in the hospital and in rehab the nurses, therapists and doctors had much to tell me. So often I interrupted them with my many questions. Then and now that I am home, I have to listen slowly before I open up my big mouth to interrupt!
What person in your life needs you to listen slowly to what they are saying?
