When This Is Over

Share with your friends on Facebook

When this is over,
may we never again
take for granted
A handshake with a stranger
Full shelves at the store
Conversations with neighbors
A crowded theatre
Friday night out
The taste of communion
A routine checkup
The school rush each morning
Coffee with a friend
The stadium roaring
Each deep breath
A boring Tuesday
Life itself.

When this ends,
may we find
that we have become
more like the people
we wanted to be
and may we stay
that way — better
for each other
because of the worst.

By Laura Kelly Fanucci

Laura Fanucci was up in the middle of the night with her 5-week-old newborn when the words came to her: “When this is all over….” She wrote the poem on her smart phone.

Laura is an author and mother of five who writes about parenting, grief and the sacramentality of everyday life. She thinks her poem comes from her experience of losing twin girls in a miscarriage. She says this taught her about processing and sharing her grief. Laura celebrated Holy Week and Easter in her very full house with her family.

“When this is over….”  YOU fill in the rest of your story………..
